Hazel Highland

October 11, 1934 — June 30, 2014

Hazel “Laverne” Highland passed away on Monday, June 30, 2014, after an extended illness.  Laverne was born October 11, 1934, in Cloverdale, Alabama, to Owen and Mae (Haddock) South.   Laverne was a free-spirited woman who enjoyed living in different communities in Arkansas (among them, Lonoke, DeValls Bluff, Little Rock, Jonesboro, and, most recently, Brinkley).  She also lived in Mishawaka, Indiana, for several years.

Laverne was employed at Remington Arms in Lonoke, Arkansas, 7UP bottling plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Cobra Industries in Elkhart, Indiana.  She retired in 1992 from Brinkley Motors, Brinkley, Arkansas.

Laverne had a passion for fishing and had a particular fondness for catfish.  She also volunteered by visiting the elderly and those unable to leave their homes.  She enjoyed Gospel music and spent countless hours working her favorite word-finder puzzles.  She loved people and considered her friends as family.

Laverne was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jack C. Highland, and her brother, David L. South (Alice).  She is survived by her son, Michael R. Highland (Kathi) of Mishawaka, Indiana, grandsons Blake R. Highland and Patrick Miguet, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and great-grandson Rew Miguet, also of Jonesboro.

Laverne loved the Lord and was a member of Assembly of God church.  Her faith carried her through difficult times and helped guide her to her final journey to the Lord.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Boyd Funeral Home, Lonoke, Arkansas.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date, with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Lonoke.  Memorial contributions can be made in Laverne’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN  38105 (or via their web site http://www.stjude.org).
